Things to see and do -

For visitors to Turgutreis there should be no shortage of things to do while on holiday. Turgutreis is one of Turkey’s premier tourist destinations and because the city’s main source of income is generated from tourism, there has been special attention put into creating a fun and lively atmosphere.  Turgutreis is a costal city situated in Turkey’s southwest province of Mugla. It buts up to the Aegean Sea, and because of this, many of the activities offered there involve water in some form or another. Spending time at the beach is a favourite past time for visitors to Turgutreis. It is no wonder, because the surrounding area has miles of sandy beaches stretching in both directions. Some of the more popular ones can get very crowded, but getting to quieter areas is possible. Yachting is one of Turgutreis most popular nautical sports. The marina has been rebuilt and now boasts an array of designer shops and swanky restaurants, its facilities now allow even more boats to come into the area.  Other water activities offered in Turgutreis include wind surfing, kayaking, snorkeling, and scuba diving. The Bodrum peninsula (on which Turgutreis is located) is one of the best diving locations in Turkey.

Bars and Restaurants in the area

When you visit Turgutreis and you are looking for an enjoyable evening out why not head for Hasan's Place-. If you are in Kadikalesi we would suggest you try Cotto Cafe, which is a new bar. Here you can expect a very warm and friendly welcome. We would also suggest Yali Restaurant where you can dine sat at a table on or very near the beach, these are just a few of the many bars and restaurants you can frequent. If you are after a very lively evening any of the bars in Bar Street maybe for you, or Nutters Bar. There really is something for every taste. On average you can expect to pay about 4 turkish lira for a large Efes (local lager) which is about £1.60 and an average meal is about 12 turkish lira which is less than £5.00 To see slideshow of local bars and restaurants click here

Kadikalesi Local Walks

Anyone visiting Turgutreis or Kadikalesi must visit Rabbit Island in Gumusluk. Leave Mandalina villa complex turning left, go over the bridge and on your right you will see an archway covered with flowers and shrubs, follow this pathway to the AVTA hotel complex, at the top of the road either catch the Dolmus to Gumusluk or walk along this road to Gumulsluk. Gumusluk is about 2 miles. Here you will find Rabbit Island, It is covered in wild rabbits, and the water is shallow enough to walk to the Island. Gumusluk is a lovely little fishing village and you can dine alongside the sea or buy some fish. There is also a place where you can buy a coffee for less than a £1 whilst sitting next to the waters edge. If you don't want to walk back, there are taxis or the Dolmus. The Dolmus will cost you 2.25 turkish lira (less than a pound). To get back to the villa using the Dolmus get off at AVTA hotel, walk down the slope and on your left is a the pathway after a few metres this becomes a tunnelled archway, follow this pathway and you will come out at the bridge, go over the bridge and the villa is on your left after the shop.

About Bodrum

Bodrum, or Halicarnassus as it was known, was made the capital of the ancient Province of Caria by Mausolus, who is remembered today through the word mausoleum. One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, it is now the site of an Underwater Museum.

The bustling Dolmus terminus in Bodrum

There are several ways to explore the peninsula, the most enjoyable of which must be to visit several of the bays and seaside villages mentioned via one of the daily boat trips available from Turgutreis harbour. Another way to get access to lots of different destinations is to take the Dolmus to Bodrum, and then see the different destinations you can go to from there. These wait for the passenger for every destination at the bus station on the main road out of town. Destinations are clearly displayed on each vehicle and all you do is go and take a seat and wait for the bus to fill.

History

As a place where people have lived continuously for thousands of years Bodrum has an incredibly rich past. Its position in or near so many of the great civilization and events of ancient history also makes Halicarnassus (Bodrum's ancient name) an important site for historians. Finding one source of complete historical information on Bodrum is apparently impossible, so the account that follows is a distillation from several sources.

boat tripBoat trips are great fun

The first settlement in this area which left structural evidence behind was on the rocky small island where the Castle of St. Peter now stands (the castle was once completely surrounded by water). When the Knights of St. John arrived to build their fortress, they found the ruins of an older castle, now known to have been built by the Dorians around 1100 BC.
Turkey has long been know as the place in the world where east meets west, and if you come to Turkey you willl find its not a clash but a extravaganza of colours and beauty that will leave you enchanted, and where else in Turkey could you get the eastern delight and the western entrepreneur? And yes Bodrum rises to that challenge, because of the yearly influx of visitors which has encouraged small entrepreneurs, who have made shopping in the wonderfully tight narrow streets of Bodrum a delight. Souvenirs abound, and on the harbour front lots of artists gather to sell you paintings drawings and portraits, you can sit and have a portrait done, or for the very brave you can have a caricature drawn, or maybe take a photograph of a loved one and take them home a portrait or even a caricature, the quality of these paintings and drawings is superb.
